AI Agents versus Search Engines: Who Controls the Buyer Journey

For more than two decades, we have recognized the search engine as the gatekeeper of a purchaser’s journey in shopping. The consumer types a word or term into a search field, reviews the first page of results, and decides which links to click on. The best and the brightest have always wanted to appear on the first page of the search. For that reason, the world of marketing has created strategies to help companies reach these coveted rankings. A new type of intermediary, an AI agent, has now entered the selling world. An AI agent does more than just give the buyer options as a search engine does. The AI agent searches, compares, and represents the buyer. This creates the next important question: instead of how to make our company the number one search engine option, we need to find out who will take the buyer through the purchasing process and what effects this will have on GEOAgent.

Two Models of Discovery

Both Search engines and AI agents solve the same problem in very different ways.

Search Engines retrieve and then rank. They provide the customer with several options and allow the customer to do the rest of the work (i.e., evaluating those options). The user retains control: they decide what to look at, how long to spend on each tab, and when to exit.

The AI agent gathers data about what the buyer wants (including finding acceptable vendors based on buyer specifications), analyzes the data, discards data that does not pertain, and gives the buyer various options to choose from or gets the job done. The buyer sees a small number of possible answers rather than the full range of possibilities, so control of the selection process shifts to the computer program.

There has not yet been a complete shift from the traditional search engine to AI. Customers continue to use both types of search engines at the moment. The evidence suggests that more and more customers are now adopting the AI models and moving away from the traditional systems. This trend continues.

Where Control Is Shifting to AI?

The Shortlist Is Formed Earlier

Under the first model of the “search” method, the customer prepares the list while searching for items/services on the Internet. However, under the second model called “agent”, the customer prepares it when they find answers to their questions on the Internet. By the time that the customer gets to the website of your company, he/she has most likely already had an AI finish the entire process of choosing which businesses should be considered, which means that most of the sales process for the customer takes place before they arrive at your business‘s owned online properties.

Evaluation Is Partly Delegated

Buyers once made their own comparisons of specifications, reviews, and prices. Today, many of those comparisons are done by agents who review all of the information provided and then present a summary of the trade-offs to the buyer. So, published details about a company’s products/services should be clear enough for systems to compare accurately and persuasive enough for people to understand.

Verification Remains a Human Step

Machines don’t control everything yet. Most buyers who are provided with an AI-generated recommendation will look at other resources to verify its accuracy, either on the company’s website, as a separate search, or as a reference source used to generate the recommendation. The verification process is where consistency becomes significant. When the information in an AI-generated recommendation is consistent with the information the buyer gathers, the confidence of the buyer in the recommendation is increased. However, when the buyer’s information is inconsistent with the AI-generated recommendation, the buyer’s confidence in the AI-generated recommendation drops immediately.

What Search Engines Still Do Better?

Treating this as a simple, one-sided competition is a bad idea. Search engines have significant advantages that will allow them to remain an important part of the consumer’s purchase decision-making process:

  • The options presented are varied, which appeals to those looking to explore and see what is available, rather than being given one option.
  • Because each page includes the results and a link back to where you found them, it’s easier to compare sources.
  • They are a constant, reliable resource; this is especially true when consumers make major buying decisions, as they prefer to verify information themselves.
  • They efficiently handle both navigational and transactional queries, such as finding a specific business’s website or an individual item.

In practice, this process will be a blended experience. A user could start by asking an AI system to create a category, use it to find more information about the category, and then contact a supplier to place an order.

What AI Agents Do Better?

AI agents have their own advantages, which explain why adoption keeps growing:

  • The early research process is made easier through the use of technology, as it allows individuals to conduct multiple searches simultaneously within a single conversation.
  • The type of questions being addressed can be multi-part and include conditional statements, which normally require multiple individual searches.
  • They translate across different media and languages, summarizing large amounts of information faster than a human customer can process the same data.
  • They will have less difficulty taking further action, moving the customer through each stage of the buying process (from questions to shortlists to next steps) with greater ease.

Accio Work and Alibaba in AI Agent-Driven Journey

Consequently, platforms have started to adapt. Alibaba.com is an established, global B2B platform. Alibaba.com is the first place many international buyers start looking for potential suppliers, so the way a supplier organizes its products or services determines how well potential consumers will be able to find and identify it. Accio Work is defined as an “agentic” team that helps businesses operate online. They connect multiple large-scale e-commerce platforms and provide automated solutions to manage the day-to-day operations of an online store using internal software tools and expert knowledge. In both cases of Alibaba.com and Accio Work, we learn that buyers, marketplaces, and AI agents benefit if they get clear and structured information about the products and services offered to them and are presented with the needed information in an efficient manner.

Final Words: Who Controls the Journey?

The honest answer is that there is no longer only one group in charge. Search engines allow consumers to search wide scopes and confirm details. On the other hand, AI agents enable customers to quickly access relevant results and begin with informed foundations that have already been evaluated. Moreover, the role of AI in the beginning stages of investigation is increasing greatly. Those companies that perceive both channels to be competitors will probably only try to optimize their website for search engines or AI agents, and will then disappear into obscurity in whatever lane is not pursued.
